Manchester City easily defeated Liverpool to extend their lead in the Women's
Super League to three points. Khadija Shaw set off some Easter magic in the
process. The forward increased her lead in the Golden Boot competition by two
goals as well; her first goal will go down as one of the season's best.
The first ten minutes saw City restricted to 35% of the
possession after early pressure from Matt Beard's team. However, they gained
momentum, and in the sixteenth minute, Lauren Hemp broke the tie at close range
by seizing a stray ball in the six-yard box.
When Mary Fowler located Jess Park on the edge of the
penalty area, the advantage was doubled. Park's strike sailed past Rachael
Laws, the Liverpool goalie, and into the lower-left corner. It took the hosts a
while to gather themselves after Shaw's incredible 25-yard strike startled
them.
At halftime, with City leading, Beard made three changes in an effort to rally
his team. Liverpool got better in the second half, but Shaw scored her second
goal of the season—and her 19th overall—with a back-post header after a
defensive slip in focus. Late in the game, Taylor Hinds' long-range effort struck the
crossbar and rebounded in off Khiara Keating, the City goalie, to give the Reds
a consolation goal. Chelsea still has a game to come as they play in the
Continental Cup final on Sunday, but City already leads by three points.
