During stage
four of the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday, Jonas Vingegaard, a
two-time Tour de France champion, suffered a horrific mass accident that
fractured his clavicle and many ribs. His team Visma-Lease a Bike stated on X,
"It was a terrible fall but thankfully he is in a stable condition and
conscious."
According to
tests conducted in the hospital, he cracked many ribs and his collarbone. He is
still being closely monitored in the hospital, the team stated on social media.
Remco Evenepoel, Jay Vine, and Steff Cras were among the other well-known
figures involved in the collision who were sent to the hospital; Primoz Roglic
was also involved but did not complete the stage.
"We
learned that Jonas was involved in a significant collision over the
radio," added Addy Engels, director of sports at Visma. The moment we got
to him, we could see something wasn't right. Even though Vingegaard's injuries
were severe, it was almost a relief that they weren't worse.
With around
35 kilometers remaining in the ride from Etxarri Aranatz to Legutio, in
northern Spain, a number of the 12 riders involved in the incident went off a
turn and into a concrete trench. Tour de France champion Victor Vingegaard
(2022–2023) was carried to the hospital on a stretcher, while Belgian winner
Eepoel (2022–2023) was ambulating but indicated he was also heading to the
hospital by his team, Soudal Quick Step.
At the scene,
Visma stated, "Jonas is conscious and will be examined in the hospital
now." "I appreciate your messages. Regarding their star, who is 27
years old and won the Basque Tour last year, they said, "More updates
later. Wout van Aert, a cyclist with Visma, had similar injuries in a serious
incident during the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race last week.
While seated
in the Bora-Hansgrohe team car, Roglic gave the thumbs up to the television
cameras to indicate that he was not seriously hurt. Roglic also withdrew from
the race. Along with Team TotalEnergies rider Cras, Australian rider Vine from
UAE Team Emirates was also brought to the hospital, although both riders were
conscious and conversing.
A rider at
the lead of the race skidded off the road on a right-hand bend, causing the
crash that occurred on the descent from the Alto de Olaeta. "Sickened by
the collision we saw today. Team Decathlon-AG2R on X stated, "We feel bad
for those who were caught, but we were saved.
"All we
can hope for is that none of the riders get too seriously hurt."
"Stage times not included" In the last 18 kilometers, Louis Meintjes
crossed the finish line first as a six-man breakaway was permitted to try and
win the stage. The six top riders will compete in the stage, but their times
won't be taken into account for the overall classification, according to the
race organizers.
"Up
until the finish line, the group will travel in neutral." Reuben Thompson
in second place and Vacek Karel in third were trailed by Meintjes at the
finish. "It's not how you want to prevail... The Intermarche-Wanty rider
from South Africa, Meintjes, told Eurosport that he would have been prepared to
fight for the stage if there had been a battle for the break.
"It's terrible that what transpired took away the
enjoyment from it; it may have been a triumph, but it doesn't feel like
one."I wish for a speedy recovery for all. I don't know what the situation was behind,
but it must have been pretty bad." The other participants in
the collision were Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl-Trek), Alexan-der Cepeda, and Sean
Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost).
Lennard Kamna, Roglic's teammate, was hospitalized in
critical care earlier on Thursday in a "stable condition" following
an accident involving a car during a training ride in Tenerife. At the
beginning of the race on Thursday, Roglic, who had also fallen in stage three
on Wednesday but bounced back, was leading Evenepoel by seven seconds in the
overall standings.
The penultimate stage, which takes place on Friday, is a 175.9-kilometer ride
north from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Amorebieta-Etxano.—APP
